thankYou-F1018-v1.jpg

Dear Lorraine,

Stephanie and I want to thank you for your hard work during our recent Fall Pledge Drive.  We truly appreciate your help!

We want to share with you an overview of the terrific pledge drive results.  The total raised was $323,453.04 (this includes the $30,000 Herb Alpert Challenge Grant).  The average pledge amount was $175.  On the last day of the drive, we had $86,310.16 pledged from 453 individuals.  Comparing back as far as 2007, this was our single best day of fundraising.

As you may be familiar, if you have been following my site for a while now, our 2019 KJazz Fall Pledge Drive has come to an end. The Pledge Drive took place for about 4 days Thursday 10/ 31 to Sunday 11/3, and the outcome of the drive was incredible! As you read in the email above, we raised a total of $323,453.04. This went way beyond our initial goal of $60,000, and we couldn’t have done it without our volunteers, DJ Hosts, staff members, and of course our head supervisor! We worked as a team and the results shows! This single handedly marks the best pledge drive we’ve had so far in regards to fundraising. In exchange for donations our donors not only received special gifts such as flash drives, iPods, CD’s, restaurant gift cards, concert tickets, etc., but also an opportunity to win our sweepstakes! Both included the opportunity to win a pair of concert tickets to our annual Jingle Jazz Concert but also a 7 day trip to Paris.

Our donors were filled with excitement and thus, eager to contribute to the radio station. Their generous contributions allowed us to raise high amount of funds that we did in this pledge drive, not to mention the immense joy they get from their special gifts. We had volunteers commute from all over to make this event possible and we couldn’t be anymore grateful! I also thought I’d note that our volunteers were incredibly, kind, friendly, and knowledgeable considering that they tend to be of the older generations. I personally find joy in conversing with older people only because they are so wise and could offer plenty insight to my naive, budding mind. All donations and contributions make it possible for KJazz to serve its’ purpose of both educating and serving our listeners with the great jazz music that they love to listen to everyday! I am personally incredibly grateful to participate in a great cause such as KJazz this past year, and to know I help play a part in its operations and overall mission makes the hard work worthwhile. To top it off, today my manager offered me more hours in celebration of my first year anniversary with KJazz. My first year at KJazz as so far been so incredible. As an intern, I am grateful to have been offered an opportunity such as this because I’ve met some inspiring people and participated in such great music events! I know that this is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to continue growing with KJazz as both a team member, and aspiring artist myself.

If you’re a jazz cat, feel free to check out our upcoming Pledge Drive this Spring in April. Rock with us and grab your favorite CD in our next drive to hear in on your favorite tune, at KJazz 88.1FM.  Our music and hosts never disappoint!

Also thought I’d mention that I will also be releasing our upcoming KJazz newsletter in December/ January as there will be plenty happening in the next few months, stayed tuned for that!

A Weekend Getaway: Hornblower Cruise

Ended the week with a small get away with my friend on the Hornblower Cruise in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles. The event was hosted by KJazz and there was live music and served with a delicious brunch. The wonderful guitarist played some great hits like Al Green “Stay Together” and Michael Buble. When we first arrived, my friend and I were greeted with a warm welcome and champagne. The cruise was a two hour ride along the coast of Marina Del Rey, with the view of the ocean and the gorgeous skyline of Marina Del Rey. Though it was a bit chilly, considering we are in the midst of Fall, the sun peaked out and basked us all in its sunlight out on the deck which kept us warm in spite of the ocean breeze and cold weather.  I had a wonderful time and great talk with my friend, who accompanied me, throughout the ride. It’s memories like this that keep me humble and grateful for all that I have and am working towards. Thought I would share some photos down below of our trip.

Exciting News: December Vocal Performance

Excited to announce that I have a secured a spot to perform with a well established band in Los Angeles. I feel so incredibly blessed and lucky to have this opportunity. I will be joining a band in their Christmas concert performance, who is known to play classical soul, funk, R&B music. The concert will be taking place for a good cause, and I only feel honored to be a part of it.

The leader of the band and I have been in correspondence for a while as we have been meaning to collaborate on music for quite some time. The amazing part of having this opportunity is the fact that it is a Christmas benefit concert. All funds will go towards children with anger management issues to ensure they get the help they need to live happier lifestyles. As someone who aspires to build her own non profit herself, this is a great chance for me to learn from others who are doing the same thing. I am so lucky and blessed, it feels as though things are falling together for me to help me accomplish my long-term goals. There will also be A/B/C listers at the concert who are regular guests for the bands’ appearances. Aretha Franklin’s manager will be there along with many others alike, retired football players and others flying in from other states like Georgia to name a few. It’s going to be a huge event, and I can not be any more excited. This is a chance for to gain some exposure as an artist while also experience performing live in front of a huge audience of about 200-300 people. We will be performing Christmas and holiday songs that will appeal to everybody and who will find a liking to.

As a sneak peak, I thought I’d  include a snippet of me performing for rehearsals and recorded by the band leader himself. Quite honestly, there is no other place that feels like home than to be on a stage, holding a microphone, and pouring my soul out in the form of notes and melodies. While I can appreciate my performance (and I hope you do too) I am a perfectionist and so, it makes me so uncomfortable to hear my mistakes in the video. However, as an aspiring vocalist, I am learning every day to become a better artist. As I’ve always lived by, mastery takes humility and this is only the beginning. Anyhow, hope you enjoy.

I suggest you put your volume up since it is a bit low in the video!

New Netflix Series: Rhythm & Flow

Netflix just released a new series called Rhythm & Flow, and it’s fire. The show entails stars Chance the Rapper, Cardi B, and T.I. on the hunt for the next rap star. They visit the four biggest cities which resides the hub of music: Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. The winner gets $250,000 cash prize alongside a feature with big name rappers. It’s an all or nothing deal. Let me tell ya’ll somethin’, there was some damn talented rappers out there. You can tell simply by their presentation and delivery, who was serious about winning, and who wasn’t. By their cadence, style, flow, lyricism, and their overall energy who was the real deal. Also who has been in the game the longest! My top favorites are definitely: D Smoke, London B, Flawless, and Rae Kahlil (who I personally think was robbed in this show which you’ll have to watch to find out!). You can tell that they have put some much time, effort, and love in their craft that its so admirable. I think the rap battles is where their artistry and confidence as an artist truly shows. Despite of doubt and tribulation, they did that. It only encourages me to work at my game and to be patient with myself. Because I think all it takes is a little skill, perseverance, faith, and hard work ethic. Those who are natural stars will simply shine brighter period. But it’s up to the people to see it and decide for themselves.

Overall, all that aside, I am a bit skeptical about the judges and the way they have approached the show in terms of their judgments. In my opinion, I think there is possibly a better match team of judges who I think can offer more valuable insight into the art of rapping (though the judges did drop some words of wisdom). Idols, in my opinions, with much higher credibility. In my opinion, there should be legends and more main star appearances of OG rappers like Snoop Dog or even ice cube. I think this will give more overall value to the show. To me, the current judges are simply the face of modern rap music (while Cardi B and Chance the Rapper have somewhat generated a household name for themselves, they haven’t left a legacy that give them the credibility to critique other artists’ work). So it only leaves me under the impression that the show is more a matter of entertainment than the true art of rap (much like how singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice turned out). But any who, who wants to hear about semantics, right?

If ya’ll want to keep up with the culture, I definitely recommend the watch. Certainly not a waste of time if you a fan of the arts yourself. Can also read more about the show here.

Playing For Change Non-Profit Organization: What’s Going On

playing-for-change.jpg
Absolutely, love everything this organization represents.
I was first contacted by Playing for Change back in 2016 for an internship position.
However, due to the circumstances of that time, I was unable to move forward with the process. While I do somewhat hold regret, I know that maybe one day I can re-apply if it is meant to be.

Playing For Chance is a non profit organization based in Los Angeles that helps to create social change on a global scale through music. The organization offers educational opportunities to marginalized and under served youth, traveling the world to record/film musicians from different countries. You can check out their amazing work below. As someone with Batchelor’s in Sociology and who studied social change for years and who has such great passion for music, I am so fascinated and delighted by this organization. They have so much to offer, and I can not wait to be a part of this movement in the future.

Online Submission For Vocal Competition: 2019 StarQuest Taste Of Soul Festival

Screen Shot 2019-08-14 at 2.45.30 AM.pngScreen Shot 2019-08-14 at 2.31.40 AM.png

Ahh, I am so excited to announce that I submitted my audition video for the 2019 StarQuest: Taste of Soul Festival, which they just posted on their site. The festival will take place sometime in October, which I look forward to attending. As you may or may not know, I decided to stay in Los Angeles to get more involved with the great music scene here. As a little girl, I’ve always dreamt of becoming a professional singer and now that I am older, I have realized nothing else is my truest passion. I recall friends and family asking my 13 year-old self what I wanted to be when I was older and I knew I wanted to become a singer. But my insecurities, lack of faith/self-confidence, and judgment of others held me back. Today, I am currently trying to overcome my fears and leave all the negative energy built over the years behind and even though it is hard.. I know it will be worthwhile. I feel the most alive when I am singing, and I know that there is soo much more in my journey to learn and explore as an aspiring singer. And for me, as an artist, I think that is the most exciting part. I’ve learned this is only the beginning. If you have a chance, I ask if you can please check out my audition video. You can check it out here! Every like counts ♥ Also, please don’t forget to check out the fellow talented singers, which you can find here. Your encouragement and support truly means a lot. Thanks for sticking with me and listening to my rant. Please share && comment with your friends!

Much much love,

Lorraine
